About the project
Imithente and Imithente Legacy have released Umakoti Egoyile, a seven-track album that opens a new chapter for one of South Africa’s most influential female Maskandi groups. Released on 23 October 2026 through Gallo Record Company, the project brings together the group’s established musical roots with a new generation of family voices. The album was recorded at Takk Studios in Johannesburg and is built around the vocal harmonies, concertina, and guitar associated with Imithente, while allowing younger contributors to bring their own energy and perspectives into the music.
The album opens with “Bengi Wrong,” a song centred on relationship breakdown and accountability, before moving into “Sivika Izibhamu,” which addresses inherited conflict and the lasting consequences of hatred. “Ubethembisa,” featuring Qiniso Nsele, tells a deeply personal story of hope and loss, while “Angifuni Ukungasho,” featuring Luve Dubazane, brings a more confident love-song energy to the project. The title track, “Umakoti Egoyile,” featuring Ama NND International, explores the pressures faced by a young bride navigating criticism, family expectations, marriage, and personal dignity.
The final songs continue the album’s mix of social reflection and personal storytelling. “Inyoka,” featuring Jaiva Zimnike, uses the image of a snake to examine betrayal, while “Umathandana,” with AmaCasanova and Amahle, closes the release with a joyful perspective on love and choosing one’s own romantic future. Umakoti Egoyile is also a tribute to the group’s legacy following the passing of longtime leader Dumisile Manana-Mthalane. With Nondumiso Ngubane, Nelile Mthalane, and Nokuthula Manana helping carry the name forward, Imithente and Imithente Legacy present an album that respects the past while making room for the future.
